How to install an eSIM on Windows 11

In this guide, you have a step-by-step walkthrough to take when installing an eSIM on your Windows 11 device.

Installing an eSIM using a QR Code

Before attempting to install the eSIM, there are three main things you will need:

  • A strong internet connection - Ideally, you will need to be connected to Wi-fi or have a good 4G signal.
  • An eSIM compatible device - If you are unsure, here's a list of compatible devices: List of compatible devices
  • The device isn't locked to one Mobile Network - If you are unsure whether or not your device is locked to a certain network, have a look at our article on how to check if your device is "locked/unlocked": Locked/unlocked devices
  1. Open the Windows 11 Settings app by clicking the Start button and selecting the gear icon on the left-hand side of the Start menu.

  2. Click on "Network & internet" in the Settings app.

  3. In the "Network & internet" settings, click on "Cellular" on the left-hand side of the page.

  4. Click the "Add a plan" button under the "Mobile data" section on the right-hand side of the page.

  5. Select "eSIM" as the connection type.

  6. Enter the necessary information for your eSIM, such as the activation code, IMEI number, and other details, depending on the carrier you are using.

  7. Follow the prompts to complete the setup process and activate your eSIM plan.

Once the eSIM is installed and activated, you should be able to use it to connect to the internet and make calls, depending on the capabilities of your device and carrier.

  1. Open the "Settings" app on your Windows device.

  2. Click on "Network & Internet".

  3. Click on "Cellular" in the left-hand menu.

  4. Click on "Add a new eSIM profile".

  5. Select "Install an eSIM from a QR code".

  6. Scan the QR code provided by your mobile network operator using your device's camera.

  7. Once the QR code is scanned, the eSIM profile will be automatically downloaded and installed on your device.

  8. If prompted, enter any additional details required by your mobile network operator, such as your account information or verification code.

  9. Once the installation is complete, your Windows device will be connected to the mobile network using the eSIM.

How to install an eSIM Manually on a Windows Device

In this guide, you have a step-by-step walkthrough you can take when installing an eSIM on your Windows Device.

Installing an eSIM manually.

Before attempting to install the eSIM, there are three main things you will need:

  • A strong internet connection - Ideally you will need to either be connected to Wi-fi or have a good 4G signal.
  • An eSIM compatible device - if you are unsure, a list of compatible devices is listed here: List of compatible devices
  • The device isn't locked to one Mobile Network - If you are unsure of whether or not your device is locked to a certain network, have a look at our article on how to check if your device is "locked/unlocked" Locked/unlocked devices
  1. Open the Windows Settings app and select "Network & Internet."

  2. Click on "Cellular" and then "Add a cellular plan."

  3. To be able to Manually install the eSIM, you will need your "SM-DP + Address" and "Activation code". You  must enter in the format of "1$Insert SM-DP + address here$ followed by the activation code, eg JQ-1MU12G-CJN26F. The code should end up looking something similar to the photo below.

  4. Click "download" and it will enable the installation process. (Note: This may take up to 10 minutes, please do NOT close this, or the installation will stop.)

  5. Follow the prompts to complete the eSIM activation process.

How to Uninstall an eSIM from Windows Device

If you are looking to uninstall your eSIM from your Oppo device, follow the steps below:

Before starting the uninstall process, ensure you have a stable internet connection. Ideally, connect to the local Wifi or use a good 4G connection.

Note: You can also temporarily disable an eSIM if you intend to use it again.
Deactivating or disabling an eSIM will not extend the validity of the eSIM.

  1. Go into Settings.
  2. Click on "Network & Internet".
  3. Click on "Cellular" from the left-hand menu.
  4. Under the "eSIM" section, click on the eSIM you want to uninstall.
  5. Click on the "Remove" button.
  6. Confirm that you want to remove the eSIM by clicking on "Yes" in the pop-up window.

After following these steps, the eSIM should be uninstalled from your Windows device.

Turning Data Roaming on / off on Windows Device

It is essential that "Data Roaming" is enabled in order to use the eSIM. 

You can turn "On" and "Off" your Data Roaming in your settings.

Turning on your Data Roaming will allow any eSIM to work with your device.

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your device.

  2. Click on "Network & Internet."

  3. Click on "Cellular" in the left-hand menu.

  4. Scroll down to the "Data roaming options" section.

  5. To turn on data roaming, toggle the "Data roaming" switch to the on position. Your device may prompt you to confirm that you want to enable data roaming.

Manual Network Selection on Windows Devices

If you are struggling with a poor-quality connection on a particular network, we advise you manually search and select a different network. You will only be able to get an internet connection on the network(s) we offer a service on.

To look at this, follow these steps:

  1. Go into Settings.

  2. Click on "Network & Internet."

  3. Click on "Cellular" in the left-hand menu.

  4. Under "Mobile Plans" click on the eSIM you want to modify.

  5. Scroll down to the "Network selection" section.

  6. Click on "Search for networks."

  7. Your device will begin scanning for available networks. Once the scan is complete, you will see a list of available networks.

  8. Click on the network you want to connect to.

  9. You are now connected to the desired network.

Identify Device Model on Windows Device

Providing your Windows device is newer or the same as Microsoft's Surface Pro LTE,  your phone should be compatible with an eSIM.

If you would like to check this, you can do so by following these steps:

1. Go into Settings.

2. Scroll until you see the option of "About phone"
3. On this page you should now see the device model / name.

 

 

Locate ICCID (eSIM Serial Number) on Windows Devices

It may be necessary to identify the unique ICCID associated with your eSIM, This guide walks you through the steps on a Windows device.

  1. Open the Settings app by clicking on the Start menu and selecting "Settings."

  2. Click on "Network & Internet."

  3. Click on "Cellular" in the left-hand menu.

  4. Under "Mobile Plans" you will see the ICCID listed for each active cellular plan.

Set up an APN on Windows Devices

All our eSIM's have an automatic Access Point Name (APN) so manual programming is not necessary.

However, if you do want to check or manually configure the APN, follow the steps below:

  1. Go into Settings.

  2. Click on "Network & Internet."

  3. Click on "Cellular" in the left-hand menu.

  4. Under "Mobile Plans" click on the cellular plan you want to modify.

  5. Scroll down to the "APN settings" section.

  6. From here you can see the name of the APN which should be under the name of "drei.at".If it does not show the name, then go to step 7.

  7. You can now manually rename it to "drei.at" in the Name section. Leave the other fields blank.
