How to install an eSIM using a QR Code on Fairphone Devices

In this guide, you have a step-by-step walkthrough you can take when installing an eSIM on your Fairphone device.

Installing an eSIM using a QR Code.

Before attempting to install the eSIM, there are three main things you will need:

  • A strong internet connection - Ideally you will need to either be connected to Wi-fi or have a good 4G signal.
  • An eSIM compatible device - if you are unsure, a list of compatible devices is listed here: List of compatible devices
  • The device isn't locked to one Mobile Network - If you are unsure on whether or not your device is locked to a certain network, have a look at our article on how to check if your device is "locked/unlocked" Locked/unlocked devices

Do not forget to turn on "Data Roaming" once the installation is complete.

  1. Open the Settings app on your Fairphone device.

  2. Tap on "Network & Internet".

  3. Tap on "Mobile network".

  4. Tap on "Advanced".

  5. Tap on "Carrier".

  6. Tap on the plus sign (+) at the top right corner.

  7. Tap on "Scan code".

  8. Scan the QR code provided by your mobile network operator.

  9. Wait for the eSIM to download and activate.

  10. Once the eSIM is activated, you can select it as your primary SIM card in the "Mobile network" settings.

  • The device isn't locked to one Mobile Network - If you are unsure of whether or not your device is locked to a certain network, have a look at our article on how to check if your device is "locked/unlocked" Locked/unlocked devices

Do not forget to turn on "Data Roaming" once the installation is complete.

Note that the exact steps may vary slightly depending on the version of Android installed on your Fairphone device.

  1. Make sure your Fairphone device supports eSIM and that you have an eSIM activation code from your mobile network operator.

  2. Open the Settings app on your Fairphone device.

  3. Tap on "Network & Internet".

  4. Tap on "Mobile network".

  5. Tap on "Advanced".

  6. Tap on "Carrier".

  7. Tap on the plus sign (+) at the top right corner.

  8. Enter the eSIM activation code provided by your mobile network operator.

  9. Tap on "Add".

  10. Wait for the eSIM to download and activate (Note: This may take up to 10 minutes, please do NOT close this, or the installation will stop.)

  11. Once the eSIM is activated, you can select it as your primary SIM card in the "Mobile network" settings.

 

How to uninstall an eSIM on Fairphone Device

If you are looking to uninstall your eSIM from your Fairphone device, follow the steps below:

Before starting the uninstall process, ensure that you have a stable internet connection. Ideally, connect to the local Wifi or use a good 4G connection.

Note: You can also temporarily disable an eSIM if you intend to use it again.
Deactivating or disabling an eSIM will not extend the validity of the eSIM.

  1. Open the Settings app on your Fairphone device.

  2. Tap on "Network & Internet".

  3. Tap on "Mobile network".

  4. Tap on "Advanced".

  5. Tap on "Carrier".

  6. Find the eSIM you want to uninstall and tap on it.

  7. Tap on "Remove"/"Delete".

  8. If prompted, confirm that you want to uninstall the eSIM by tapping "OK".

  9. Wait for the eSIM to be uninstalled.

Turning Data Roaming on / off on Fairphone Device

It is essential that "Data Roaming" is enabled in order to use the eSIM. 

You can turn "On" and "Off" your Data Roaming in your settings.

To turn on data roaming on a Fairphone device, you can follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your Fairphone device.

  2. Tap on "Network & Internet".

  3. Tap on "Mobile network".

  4. Scroll down and look for "Data roaming".

  5. Tap on the toggle switch next to "Data roaming" to turn it on.

  6. If prompted, confirm that you want to turn on data roaming by tapping "OK".

Manual Network Selection on Fairphone Devices

If you are struggling with a poor-quality connection on a particular network, then we advise you manually search and select a different network. You will only be able to get an internet connection on the network(s) we offer a service on.

To look at this, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your Fairphone device.

  2. Tap on "Network & Internet".

  3. Tap on "Mobile network".

  4. Tap on "Advanced".

  5. Tap on "Operator selection".

  6. Select "Manual" instead of "Automatic".

  7. Wait for your Fairphone to scan for available networks.

  8. Select the network you want to use from the list of available networks.

  9. Wait for your Fairphone to register with the selected network.

Identify Device Model on Fairphone Devices

Providing your Fairphone device is newer or the same as the FP4 Fairphone, your phone should be compatible with an eSIM.

If you would like to check this, you can do so by following these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your Fairphone device.
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the Settings menu and tap on "About phone".

  3. Look for the "Model number" or "Device model" section.

  4. The model number of your Fairphone should be listed in this section.

Locate ICCID (eSIM Serial Number) on Fairphone Devices

It may be necessary to identify the unique ICCID associated with your eSIM. This article walks you through the steps on a Fairphone device.

  1. Open the Settings app on your Fairphone device.

  2. Tap on "About phone".

  3. Tap on "Status".

  4. Scroll down to find the "ICCID" or "SIM card status" section.

  5. The ICCID should be listed in this section.

Set up an APN on Fairphone Devices

All our eSIM's have an automatic Access Point Name (APN) so manual programming is not necessary. 

However, if you do want to check or manually configure the APN, follow the steps below:

  1. Open the Settings app on your Fairphone device.

  2. Tap on "Network & Internet".

  3. Tap on "Mobile network".

  4. Tap on "Advanced".

  5. Tap on "Access Point Names".

  6. From here you can see the name of the APN which should be under the name of "drei.at".If it does not show the name, then go to step 7.
  7. Click on the APN > You can now manually rename it to "drei.at" in the Name section, leave the other fields blank.
